But we eat the foods of Hanukkah!

img_0002Adding to my children’s complicated religious life is the fact that they have attended day care at a local Jewish center.  My older son, who is now five, has attended there since he was an infant.  He used to want to be Jewish, but lately he has become more aware of the fact that I am not Jewish and that we go to the Quaker meeting and that that is different from being Jewish.

The other day they had an early Hanukkah party at the center.  I came to pick up my son, and, unlike last year, he wasn’t that excited about hanging out for the party:

We don’t celebrate Hanukkah.

That’s true.  We celebrate Christmas.

(pause) But, we eat the foods of Hanukkah!

Which ones?

Latkes!

He is right; I made latkes last year.  And again this year, and maybe again next week.  Latkes are really, really yummy.
